We are thrilled to announce our new afforestation project in collaboration with CEDEPAS, in the district of Arapa in southern Peru. This community reforestation ensures not only plant regeneration, but also the establishment of native groves capable of withstanding extreme conditions above 4,000 metres above sea level. Queñua reforestation not only contributes to climate change mitigation, but also strengthens water security, protects crops, and creates a foundation for new community development opportunities around native forests.
Desert Leaves is renewing its Board of Trustees and is seeking motivated individuals passionate about environmental issues and nature conservation. This voluntary role offers an opportunity to contribute to a foundation dedicated to fighting desertification and restoring arid lands. Applications are open to professionals from various sectors, with a special invitation to women to help foster a diverse and dynamic team.
Pego Viu is celebrating its 10th anniversary on the weekend of May 10–11 in Pego, commemorating a decade since the wildfire that inspired the formation of the collective. The event will feature stalls from local groups, a talk about Pego Viu’s journey, live music, tastings, workshops, a documentary premiere, and a roundtable discussion on the future of the territory. On Sunday, participants will take a guided excursion to visit reforested areas and ongoing restoration efforts.
We were really happy to host an event in Fuente la Reina last Friday, focusing on sustainable reforestation and land management, with 14 participants, including landowners, actively engaging in the discussion. Topics covered included biodiversity restoration, climate-smart forest management, and reforestation options, with a special thanks to the local municipality and Bar Social for their support.
On April 10th, Desert Leaves and Pego Viu hosted a well-attended info session in Pego, drawing around 40 local landowners. The event encouraged participants to see unmanaged land as an opportunity for climate action and reforestation. With strong community interest, the next steps include supporting attendees in planning restoration projects and applying for funding — marking a promising start for local landscape regeneration.
Landowners in Pego and Fuente la Reina are invited to participate in upcoming MiMonte info sessions focused on sustainable land management and wildfire prevention. These events aim to inspire local action toward restoring forest landscapes and enhancing biodiversity. Attendees will learn how to transform their land into a long-term ecological asset.
In March 2025, Desert Leaves partnered with RH Hotels for a Reforestation Day in Pego, where 60 RH Hotels employees planted 328 trees. This initiative supports carbon offsetting, biodiversity enhancement, and community engagement in the Valencian Community. The event highlights the growing link between sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility. A heartfelt thanks to RH Hotels for contributing to a greener future! 🌱
